emmie (they/them) is a queer, asian-american scenic designer specializing in new work and immersive design. excited by work rooted in community and collaboration that prioritizes inclusivity and challenges traditional uses of theatrical space, emmie is passionate about the dramaturgical contributions of design in new work development. they love collaborating with directors, writers, and performers in the early stages of development, using design to deepen world building and storytelling.

their work has been produced in new york at The Public, Signature Theatre, 2nd Stage, Rattlestick Playwright’s Theatre, Lincoln Center, Atlantic Theater Company, NYTW, JACK, ART/NY, HERE Arts, La MaMa, Ars Nova, 59E59, and the National Black Theater, and regionally at A.R.T., Hartford Stage, the La Jolla Playhouse, Yale Repertory Theater, Baltimore Center Stage, Theaterworks Hartford, and Actor’s Express.

as a member of Woodshed Collective, emmie has served as associate production designer and contributed to the creative development and immersive design of many critically acclaimed projects including KPOP and Empire Travel Agency.

emmie is the associate creative director of the Outside Lands Music Festival, and frequently works on music festivals and other large scale experiential events as an associate with Iron Bloom Creative Production.

emmie considers teaching and working with young artists central to their creative practice. they are currently on the faculty of the Playwrights Horizons Theater School at NYU, and previously taught design and technical theater at the Fieldston School. they have been fortunate to continue to collaborate with students and young artists at Fieldston, Macalester College, Wesleyan University, the Yale Dramat, and through their work with Trusty Sidekick and Bluelaces Theater Company.

emmie holds a B.A. with High Honors in Theater and Sociology from Wesleyan University, and an M.F.A. in Design from the Yale School of Drama, where they were the recipient of the Donald and Zorka Oenslager Fellowship Award in Design. they are a proud member of Local USA 829.
